The field unit-youth club Guca first Annual Meeting

From May 12th to14th 2006, apart from their other activities such as the World’s week of the Red Cross, visit to the youth field unit of Karpos in Skopje, the Red Cross Nis volunteers have visited the field unit foundation meeting of Guca. Having entered the bus, Milos and I could not even imagine what adventure we were getting ourselves into. It was the beginning of our rocking seven hours panoramic journey through Southern and Central Serbia, with stops in every small or smaller place on the road.

Having reached Guca, all our previous panoramic pictures faded away, for Guca appears not to be in Serbia but somewhere in the middle of the green glow of another planet. Guca is a small town in the Lucani municipality, quiet and clean, carefully arranged and with lawns tidy and neatly cut. People are very warm and friendly, always cheerful… Guca is famous for its traditional Trumpet Parade which is going to be held this year for the 46th time from August 21st till 27th. This event one should not miss! Guca becomes then, as the people there says with proud, the world’s kingdom of trumpets.
When we arrived in Guca we went to the Red Cross to meet our hosts. The seat of their Red Cross is in the building recently built in the center of Guca, near the river Belica and a stream of a bit unusual name called Butwash (Periguz). After we rested a little we spent the evening walking around Guca. There was a big traditional dance going on in front of the Cultural Centre that gathered all people from Guca and culture and art societies from the region. The site was magnificent. People in this town very much appreciate and cherish their cultural inheritance, our traditional costumes, dance and music.
On Saturday, the meeting was held and the youth field unit was constituted under the name of Youth club of Guca. The governing body of this unit was created. For the president of the field unit was chosen Aleksandra Jelic. This meeting was the opportunity for the guests and the hosts to share their experiences over the past activities of their municipality organizations. Besides the volunteers from Nis, the meeting in Guca was attended by the volunteers from Gornji Milanovac, Velika Plana, Vrbas, Ivanjica, Pozega, Rakovica, Kikinda, Paracin, Trstenik, and Cacak. After the meeting was over, the hosts prepared unforgettable barbecue with lots of delicious sausages and meatballs in front of the Hunting centre set on a hill above Guca. We got to enjoy the incredible view on Guca, green surroundings and the river in a very casual and spontaneous atmosphere.
In the evening, there was a party organized to celebrate the foundation of the Red Cross field unit. It was a very good party and the main event in Guca.
On Sunday it was time to say Goodbye. It was hard for us to leave, so we waited to take the last bus leaving for Cacak that day!

The gathering in Guca was something unforgettable, we, from Nis, were especially moved by this event. We can hardly wait to meet our new friends again… We hope that, soon, we will be able to invite all those who were so kind to host us to come to Nis to celebrate the foundation of our Youth field unit! Milos and I are especially grateful to our hosts – Nikola and Marija, thank you for solving all those question marks on the guests list!
