Nis, 16 April 2006: 18 students, together with their professors and coaches, of the Law and Political Science faculties, Police and Military Academies from the cities of Nis, Novi Sad, Belgrade and Podgorica (Serbia and Montenegro - SCG), 6 teams altogether, have gathered at the Law Faculty in Nis in southern Serbia for the Fifth National Competition in IHL.
This national competition, which takes place each year, is this year implemented jointly by the Law Faculty of Nis, Red Cross organizations of Serbia and the city of Nis, with support from the Red Cross of SCG and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with the aim of providing an opportunity for practical exposure to IHL through imaginary cases of internal/international armed conflicts and a greater degree of specialization in IHL for university students involved in this area of international public law, as well as a preparation for regional and international competitions in the same field of expertise.

At the opening ceremony at the Nis Law Faculty, Mr. Peter Fluege, Deputy Head of ICRC Delegation, remarked that “ICRC is glad to see that Serbia and Montenegro is continuing to cherish the now established tradition of competitions in IHL, and, furthermore, that students from this country continue to rank very high in regional and international competitions”.

Mr. Aleksandar Ciric PhD, Dean of Law Faculty in Nis, expressed “great pleasure to be able to host the competition and hope that the practice and principles of IHL will soon be fully integrated into the educational systems in the country”.

“This is a unique opportunity for students of IHL to put their knowledge into practice, and also provides an excellent reference for their future professional work” – said Mrs. Gordana Nilenkovic, Head of ICRC Communications Team.
