The history

Building of the social home
of the CB Red Cross in Nis

In 1887. The social home of the CB Red Cross was built and it was initiated by the president of the Subcommittee of the CB Red Cross in Nis, the bishop Dimitrije Pavlovic.

The foundation of a home for
abandoned children

Dr. Vladan Djordjevic initiates the formation of the home and the CB Red Cross supports the idea of the Home for abandoned children in Nis.
In 1902. the Home for abandoned children was opened.
Due to poor health and hygienic conditions this home was closed after six years of existance but it was a predecessor of today`s home.

The foundation of the sanitary autopark

1.10.1937. the CB Red Cross organized the sanitary autopark consisting of eleven vehicles. Each of them had four stretchers and was marked by the CB Red Cross symbol. It was a prototype of today`s Ambulance in Nis.

The social activitiy of the CB Red Cross

In the period after the second World War this activity reflected in:
- giving help payments to vulnerable population
- the distribution of food and hygienic products to vulnerable population
- giving help payments to the victims of fashist terror
- putting children without parents under custody.


    This activity was undertaken by the social service in 1966. when the Centre for social activities was formed in Nis.

In 1952. a home for deaf and mute children was formed by the organizaton of the CB Red Cross. After building the special school for these children this specialized institution took over this activity in full.
In 1959. The CB Red Cross in Nis started home care and this was also undertaken later by the special institution which still has the same name.
1991. is the year of the beginning of desintegration of Yugoslavia and coming of the first refugees.
At the end of April, before the war in Slovenia the first refugees from this republic came
to Nis. By the end of the year the CB Red Cross registered and took care of 1.270 refugees. During 1992-94. this number came up to 12 000 people.

The CB Red Cross put these people in the homes of locals but it was the time of the opening of Collective centres.
In 1995. in August – in ten days, after the fall of Kraina, around 30 000 people came. The CB Red Cross Nis opened the Collective centre. With the help of local and regional authorities the CB Red Cross put these people in 20 nearest municipalities while 14 000 of them stayed in Nis.

      Sava Kostic was born in 1883. in Kursumlijska banja and upon his moving to Nis in 1910. he opened a small cloth - manufacturing shop. Since his early youth he had been a member of the CB Red Cross organization and was successful in charitable activities during the Balkan wars.
      


In 1923 he was elected a member of the Administrative Committee of the CB Red Cross Nis and from then on in the next 40 years he remained faithfull to the core idea of this organization. Since 1939. he organization was placed in his family house which he gave away to the CB Red Cross on 16.12.1954.
