In 1952. a home
for deaf and mute children was formed by the organizaton
of the CB Red Cross. After building the special school
for these children this specialized institution took
over this activity in full.
In 1959. The CB Red Cross in Nis
started home care and this was also undertaken later
by the special institution which still has the same
name.
1991. is the year of the beginning
of desintegration of Yugoslavia and coming of the
first refugees.
At the end of April, before the war in Slovenia the
first refugees from this republic came
to Nis. By the end of the year the CB Red Cross registered
and took care of 1.270 refugees. During 1992-94. this
number came up to 12 000 people.
The CB Red Cross put these people in the homes of
locals but it was the time of the opening of Collective
centres.
In 1995. in August – in ten days,
after the fall of Kraina, around 30 000 people came.
The CB Red Cross Nis opened the Collective centre.
With the help of local and regional authorities the
CB Red Cross put these people in 20 nearest municipalities
while 14 000 of them stayed in Nis.
